John Graves

John Graves (1920- ) is the author of Goodbye to a River, the primary text for the 2007-2008 Common Experience. The book, published in 1960, is the story of Graves' 1957 canoe journey down the Brazos River. Graves has published four major books as well as numerous articles and co-authored works. He is the recipient of several major awards, including the Lon Tinkle Distinguished Achievement Award from the Texas Institute of Letters and the Bookend Award from the Texas Book Festival.

Graves’ papers are archived in the Southwestern Writers Collection at Texas State, his bronze statue challenges at its entrance, and he visits our campus on occasion, so students have the opportunity to experience more than his book.
